Box Office Update: Wonder Woman Moves Ahead of Batman v Superman

Box Office Update: Wonder Woman Moves Ahead of Batman v Superman

Truly Wonderful

By Alex Burns

Warner Bros. Pictures' Wonder Woman continues a truly wondrous first outing at the world wide box office. Dipping a mere 39% in its fourth weekend of release, with an estimated $25.175 million, the latest instalment of the DCEU bordering on $320 million domestically. What is even more impressive, considering Wonder Woman was viewed as a risky project by WB for decades, is the fact that the film is now out-pacing all three of the previous DCEU releases. Wonder Woman has passed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which made $311.3 million after the same number of days in release.

Further cementing Wonder Woman's place as the most commercially successful film in the current DC Comics slate is the fact that it has now out-grossed Man of Steel's final domestic total, $291.04 million, and it's only a matter of time before the Patty Jenkin's directed feature pushes past Suicide Squad (325.1 million) and Batman v Superman ($330.4 million) completely. This domestic performance will make Wonder Woman the third biggest DC Comics adaptation domestically, behind only The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

Internationally, Wonder Woman added another $20.5 million from 65 markets for an overseas cume of $334.5 million. Whilst internationally the film is behind the other DCEU projects it should best Man of Steel's total of $377 million. Overall, Wonder Woman has now topped $635 million worldwide and as it currently stands is the sixth largest DC Comics adaptation of all-time worldwide. The film also had a much tighter production budget of $150 million, whereas Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad all pushed well past $200 million plus marketing. While Wonder Woman may not gross more than the other DC film's final worldwide totals, it may well be more profitable due to this sensible budgeting from WB. That worldwide tally also makes Wonder Woman the highest grossing female-directed feature of all time, Patty Jenkins take a bow.

Watch the Wonder Woman End Credits Sequence Online

Origin Story

By Alex Burns

Wonder Woman is still doing incredible box office numbers and is going from strength to strength as the best reviewed DCEU film yet. In a cool development, the fantastic end credits sequence from the film has been made available to view online!

The Wonder Woman main-on-end titles are an amazing part of this movie. They act as a sort of reprise of the story, a recap of what the audience has just seen. Is that how you initially approached it?

Patty: In our case the title sequence almost became the end of the movie in a beautiful way. You’re right at a moment when you wish you had more and it becomes more. It carries forward the story in a way. What the final moment of the film is best at is saying “Now there’s Wonder Woman, now Wonder Woman is born.”

Ron Howard Takes Over Han Solo Film

Production Resumes July 10th

By Franco Dionisio

Following the departure of directors Chris Lord and Phil Miller from the upcoming Han Solo film, Lucasfilm have now confirmed that veteran Hollywood director, Ron Howard, will now take the helm, with filming looking to resume on July 10th.

“At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.”

The directorial change-up came as a surprise to many and Ron Howard looks to a safe set of hands to guide the Star Wars spin-off film to completion, production is three quarters of the way through at the time of Lord and Miller's departure over "creative differences". Howard is of course no stranger to big blockbuster entertainment and is a self-confessed fan of the Star Wars series.

“It’s a little opportunity that came my way,” Howard said to the press. “I’ve been a fan forever. It’s gratifying to be asked to lend my voice to the [Star Wars] universe. So many people involved in the ‘Star Wars’ franchise are friends. It’s already been in production, and there’s a lot of really great work there.”

The Han Solo origin film will explore a seven-year period in Han's life from 18 -24 and will provide the back story for how he came to be the smuggler we all know and love in A New Hope

The film stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. Woody Harrelson will play Han’s mentor, a man by the name of Beckett, while Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Michael K. Williams and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are attached in undisclosed roles.

The Han Solo film is still set for a May 25, 2018 release.

Phil Lord & Chris Miller Exit Han Solo Film Over "Creative Differences"

Phil Lord & Chris Miller Exit Han Solo Film Over "Creative Differences"

Movie Now in Production

By Alex Burns

Well this story comes a little out of left-field, Disney's still-untitled Han Solo origin film has lost it's directors as Phil Lord and Chris Miller exit the currently in-production movie. Check out the official statement from Lucasfilm posted on StarWars.com.

“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,”  said Lucasfilm President, Kathleen Kennedy.

As for Lord and Miller, they had this to say; “Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this clich√© is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,”

The talented directors and the cast they assembled had garnered a certain level of confidence in the Han Solo project, amid initial concerns that the film could not succeed without Harrison Ford in the title role. This departure may cause some unwanted negative press for the so far bump-free ride that the Star Wars resurgence under Disney has enjoyed. The fact that "creative differences" is cited as the main reason gives you all the evidence you need that the studio and filmmakers just were not on the same page for a spin-off project already raising eyebrows from sceptics. It will be interesting to see if Disney and Lucasfilm already have a new director ready to jump in or if this really was a shock to those involved in the production.
