The September issue of Empire has a fantastic feature on Warner Bros Pictures' 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'. We reported on the epic cover and official stills earlier in the week but now the issue is out we've got some choice excerpts from the magazine plus newly released high res pictures from the movie. Empire had an all-access pass whilst on-set during filming for the superhero movie and interviewed director Zack Snyder and the main cast. Ben Affleck's comments reveal the history of this new movie iteration of Batman as well as addressing what appealed to him in order to take on the role.

“Initially I thought, ‘I’m older, it doesn’t seem like the right sort of fit for me,'” Ben Affleck explained. “Then Zack pitched me his concept for this older, more broken, kind of f*cked up Batman. It was something we haven’t seen. We have seen that Batman is willing to cross the line to protect people. That vigilantism has been a part of his character all along, and we are tapping into that mentality when faced by something as potentially as deadly a Superman.”

Since this Batman has been around the block it's more in keeping with the comic book dark knight that fans will feel familiar with, there's 75 years of history there and it looks like the movie will cherry pick the most iconic moments of that core history to create a new, fresh Batman on screen. Director Zack Snyder also addressed the age of Ben Affleck's Batman “We are playing him 45 or 46, he has been Batman for 20 years. All the history is there. Was there a Robin at one time? Possibly.”

We know now after the reveal of the Comic-Con trailer that Robin is indeed a part of this universe and looks to have been offed by the Joker after a Robin suit was seen hanging in the Batcave covered in graffiti courtesy of the clown prince of crime himself.

The Empire feature goes further into detailing the relationship Batman will have with the wider DC universe on film, specifically the Joker, Harley Quinn and the 'Suicide Squad' movie. Turns out that Batman is the reason Deadshot, Killer Croc and co are all imprisoned at the beginning of the movie in the first place! Batman will be appearing in Suicide Squad and some of his scenes are certain to be flashbacks to these captures, refresh your mind and check out the Suicide Squad trailer again!

'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' also stars Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Amy Adams as Lois Lane and is set for release March 25th 2016 with David Ayer's 'Suicide Squad' following on August 5th 2016.
